Child labor and debt bondage persist in Cambodian brick industry (Reuters &Freedom United, Feb. 14/019)

Child labor and debt bondage remain widespread in Cambodia’s brick kilns despite an alleged successful crackdown by the government, a Thomson Reuters Foundation exposé revealed on Thursday. Thomson Reuters Foundation’s own visits to the kilns, meanwhile, found minors working and playing in brick yards alongside adults working in debt bondage. In fact, the soon-to-be-released survey by the Builders and Woodworkers Trade Union Association (BWTUC) found nearly 4,000 children living in brickyards, with about one in six saying they were also working there.
