E il messaggio: “L’inizio di un’infanzia è la fine di un’altra infanzia. Questa bambina ha 12 anni e partorirà tra meno di due mesi”.

The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow legal action against websites that host advertisements for prostitution — some of which advertise trafficked children. This includes websites like Backpage.The bill will now go to the Senate and, if approved, to the White House.The new legislation arose as current anti-trafficking laws could not be applied to websites like Backpage as they were protected under the Communications Decency Act, a law that protects websites from liability for material posted by third parties.Congress then began investigating Backpage and found that its operators were helping users modify ads to delete references to teenage prostitution, but still kept the ads up.Other Internet companies, including Google, remained opposed to the new legislation because they worry that it threatens the Communication Decency Act. Evan Engstrom, executive director of Engine, an advocacy group for Internet start-ups, said “you’re creating a situation that may end up harming efforts to stop human trafficking. It creates potential legal liability for knowingly facilitating trafficking..” Furthermore, he said material can be posted on websites without hosts’ knowledge.Still, lawmakers heralded the final vote of 388-25 on the bill as a significant step forward. Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri said “This is a landmark piece of legislation. This is not just about Backpage. There are hundreds of others out there that are much worse. Juveniles accounted for 356 (52.3 percent) of the identified victims for 2017, compared to 201 (45 percent) in 2016. Seventy-two victims were age 12 or younger — a 260 percent increase over 2016, when 20 victims of that age range were identified. “Victims of human trafficking are frequently members of vulnerable populations, including domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, homeless or runaway youth and even young children,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards. “It is modern-day slavery. It is happening right here in our state, and it is our responsibility to fight to put an end to it. We must all band together to bring every resource to bear against this cruel and dangerous epidemic.”.The report indicated the number of reported adult trafficking victims also increased, rising 25.7 percent from 214 identified victims in 2016 to 269 this past year. Medici senza Frontiere ha reso noto che nel 2017 ha ricevuto segnalazioni su 40 casi di molestie nelle proprie strutture, 24 dei quali di abusi sessuali, che sono stati identificati da indagini interne dell’organizzazione. Diciannove persone sono state licenziate, mentre gli altri membri del personale sono stati sanzionati in altri modi. Msf, mentre infuria la bufera su Oxfam, precisa che la «leadership si è impegnata inequivocabilmente a combattere gli abusi». Nel 2017, rende noto l’organizzazione, c’erano più di 40.000 membri dello staff che lavoravano sul campo e ci sono stati 146 reclami o segnalazioni di reclami riguardanti «abuso di potere, discriminazione, molestie e altre forme di comportamento inappropriato». Ho ascoltato centinaia di storie, alcune belle altre davvero tragiche. Tra queste quella di Zehra una bambina di 8 anni che mi ha disegnato i suoi ricordi, troppo dolorosi per essere raccontati, con  pennarelli e pastelli colorati. Zehra viveva in un villaggio a Homs, in Siria, in una piccola casa con i genitori e tre fratelli. Ogni tanto, in lontananza, sentivano i rumori dei bombardamenti. La stessa cosa è successa in un  giorno di giugno dello scorso anno, ma questa volta due bombe sono state sganciate  accanto alla loro casa.L’impatto ha sbalzato Zehra e le ha fatto perdere conoscenza. Si è risvegliata coperta di sangue e con la gamba destra ferita. La mamma, incinta di otto mesi, e la sorella erano a terra senza sensi; il fratello e il padre entrambi gravemente feriti. Sono poi morti.Il secondo disegno di Zehra mostra il momento in cui è stata trasportata in ambulanza alla struttura di MSF insieme alla madre.  Zehra ha dovuto subire un’amputazione sotto il ginocchio e diversi interventi chirurgici per rimuovere le schegge che le avevano ferito il viso, il petto e la gamba. Ha iniziato a usare la protesi una settimana prima che me ne andassi. Sua madre ha partorito un maschietto sano, che ora ha due mesi.Nei giorni in cui Zehra è felice, il suo sorriso riesce a illuminare l’intero ospedale. Parla e gioca per ore. Ma ci sono anche giorni in cui improvvisamente diventa silenziosa o inizia a piangere a dirotto:la guerra le ha rubato l’intera infanzia. MSF, attraverso la chirurgia e il supporto psicologico, cerca di restituire qualcosa ai pazienti come Zehra e sono orgoglioso di esserne stato parte.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) says it is stepping up its efforts to help foster kids who are victims of sex trafficking.It has trained over 2,000 child welfare workers to understand the indicators of child trafficking, and it has helped over two dozen youth in the state of Oregon in just a matter of months.DHS says that traffickers target foster kids in particular because they are seen as vulnerable. Natasha Halstvevt is one such case worker who has been trained on child trafficking.“Things like multiple cell phones, children having a lot of money a lot of times that’s the typical behavior for a teen that is stealing,” she said. “I as a caseworker didn’t think it was connected to trafficking. This week, it was reported that 11 Somali migrants set to be sold as slaves in Libya were repatriated to their home country].Though Somalia is currently experiencing its own political and social struggles, some of the repatriated migrants fell and kissed the ground as they stepped off of the plane in Mogadishu but  there are so many more still being bought and sold in Libya. The exploitation endured by migrants and refugees crossing Libya in search of decent work and opportunity motivated hundreds of thousands of people around the world, including celebrities and influencers, to speak out on social media against this atrocious crime. We believe that in order to really impact change and protect the lives of migrants in Libya, the first step must be to launch an official UN investigation.That’s why the Freedom United campaign calls for Secretary-General Guterres to formally investigate slave markets in Libya. To secure justice for victims of modern slavery in conflict zones by asking the UN Security Council to pursue the prosecution of ISIS and create a leadership appointment focused on coordinating efforts.Freedom United partnered with Yazda on a campaign calling on the UN Security Council to pursue the prosecution of ISIS for crimes against humanity including genocide and slavery of Yazidi women and children in north-eastern Iraq collecting 102,441 signatures.
