Oggi è il 1° Maggio. Festa del Lavoro. La Festa di chi il lavoro ce l’ha, di chi lo ha, ma incerto, o precario, di chi lo ha perso e non riesce a trovarlo. Ma mi chiedo, é anche la festa del lavoro per quei milioni di bambini costretti a lavorare nelle miniere di tanti Paesi del Sud del Mondo, mettendo continuamente a rischio le loro piccole vite, nelle piantagioni del Sud Est Asiatico per un compenso irrisorio, per tutte le spose bambine che lavorano come minuscole schiave nelle case dei loro mariti padroni, per quei piccoli  venduti ai pedofili, bambini o bambine che siano, ma anche per  l’infanzia sfruttata in mille lavoretti clandestini anche da noi, nelle nostre campagne in barba alle leggi, per quei bambini costretti a maneggiare materiali pericolosi che possono provocare attraverso il contatto, gravi malattie delle cui cure nessuno si occuperà? Eppure secondo logica tutti questi bambini  lavorano e  oggi dovrebbe essere un giorno di festa anche per loro o forse è la festa dei loro sfruttatori e di tutti noi che sappiamo quello che succede, ma preferiamo abbandonarci alla retorica delle corone di fiori, delle medaglie concesse ai familiari degli scomparsi nei nostri Paesi benestanti. Per carità il ricordo è sacrosanto, il dolore sofferto ed il suo ricordo è l’unica spinta che può far cambiare le cose e che va contro la facile smemoratezza di tutti per quanto riguarda tante tragedie. Ma ricordiamoci anche di quei milioni di bambini sfruttati in nome del dio denaro in tutto il mondo in via di sviluppo e del cui lavoro spesso rigonfio di sangue beneficiamo  quando, ad esempio, ci godiamo un bel pezzo di cioccolata, ci spalmiamo sul pane una gustosa crema dolce o salata, poco importa, quando ci godiamo un bel fritto misto oppure quando chattiamo o parliamo a tutto spiano con il cellulare o usiamo  la nostra moderna e tecnologica automobile, ecc.ecc. In fin dei conti sono anche loro lavoratori…Cerchiamo almeno di riflettere ricordando che, per la nostra ignavia, non siamo comunque esenti da responsabilità. Cerchiamo  di prendere contatto con  coloro che cercano di proteggere questi piccoli: le associazioni ed organizzazioni sono tante. Proviamo ad offrire (come molti di noi stanno già facendo) magari una piccola parte del nostro tempo libero e ricordiamo che è il chicco che fa il granaio, altrimenti anche noi  dovremo rispondere prima o poi della nostra colpevole smemoratezza. Buon Primo Maggio!

A leading children’s rights group has called for a doubling of the federal minimum wage and wider access to housing subsidies to end the “moral travesty” of millions of children living in poverty while the wealthiest Americans get tax cuts.The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) said in a new report that about 13 million American children are living in homes with incomes below the poverty line, depriving many of a decent education and proper nutrition, and putting them at risk of homelessness and violence. Two-thirds of those living in poverty are children of colour.“No child should have to worry where her next meal will come from or whether she will have a place to sleep each night in the wealthiest nation on Earth paid job.The organisation calls for sweeping action by Washington. It said that a combination of more than doubling the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour within five years, increased tax credits and widening childcare subsidies would cut child poverty by more than half. Increasing access to housing subsidies to low-income families on less than 150% of the poverty level of $25,100 a year for a family of four, would alone lift 2 million children out of poverty.Child poverty rates in the US were highest in Louisiana at 28% and lowest in New Hampshire at 10.3%. In other States the child poverty rates are: New Mexico: 27.2. Wests Virginia 25.9¸Washington DC 25.6 Alaska: 14.5

Cobalt, a key ingredient in the batteries that power electric vehicles, is mined by small, artisinal operations mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where supply chains are not strictly monitored.“It would take us longer to take action against cobalt and tin brands because we would give them longer to comply,” LME chief executive Matt Chamberlain said on a call with reporters.The proposal is the largest step yet by the LME, the world’s biggest market for industrial metals, to clean up global supply chains and marks a shift from the exchange’s traditional role of requiring its suppliers to meet only metallurgical standards.Under the new rules, all LME brands would by the end of 2020 undertake a “Red Flag assessment” based on guidelines set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).NGOs asked the LME to not ban cobalt brands linked to child labor, recommending instead that they work with them to ensure compliance.

Uomini, donne e bambini sfruttati a vario titolo sul lavoro. In particolare le donne il cui corpo viene anche  mercificato  sulle nostre strade e che riguarda anche giovanissime schiave “importate”al servizio delle sesso, spesso seviziate. Come pure dei minori, bambini e bambine, oggetto di espianti di organi, gettati sul mercato a beneficio dei pedofili e utilizzati nelle miniere dagli angusti cuniculi in cui spesso muoiono perchè quando si verifica una frana, non ci è modo di salvarli. E, poi, l’orrore delle spose bambine (di cui abbiamo molto parlato sul nostro sito).Tutti loro, dice Papa Francesco, rappresentano i nuovi crocifissi.  Un pensiero del curatore di questo sito: chissà se le parole del Papa ed i commenti alle Stazioni della  Via Crucis- a cura di una Suora di strada –  verranno ascoltati non solo da coloro che già le condividono ma anche da qualcuno tra i tanti che traggono enormi benefici economici da questo orribile mondo che ruota intorno agli emarginati. Un mondo smemorato che non ricorda che la morte è sempre dietro l’angolo e che prima o poi si dovrà rispondere anche di questi orrendi crimini.Insomma una insolita Via Crucis che, senza retorica, affonda il coltello in tante orribili tragedie di questo nostro tempo imbarbarito ed altamente tecnologico.

In one case, a 16-year-old named Monica and her 14-year-old sister were “sold” into marriage after their father posted their photographs on his Facebook page. The men of the clan have found the new technology helps to extend  their old, exploitative traditions.“My father knew nothing about Facebook until my elder brother bought him a smartphone and convinced him to join Facebook and post our photographs whenever he likes,” Monica said. “Once he married me, he turned me into his slave and punching bag,” “He said he paid so much to marry me and so I had to labor hard  to prove that I’m a grateful wife.”When contacted by the Daily Beast, spokespeople for Facebook said they were unfamiliar with what is happening in the Becheve community.

It’s a perplexing problem in which children — the majority of whom are not orphans — are recruited and placed in orphanage for the sole purpose of making money.Incredibly, according to Lumos, some 80% of children in orphanages are not actually orphans; they have a living parent. Yet the idea of vulnerable ‘orphans’ in developing countries attracts big money from donors and unwitting volunteers who mistakenly believe they are doing the right thing. Some of these ‘orphans’ are then sexually abused, forced to work, made to beg, or sold into illegal adoptions.

A new report from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) and Fortify Rights is making a stunning claim: crimes against humanity were committed against 139 trafficked Rohingya and Bangladeshi men, women, and children who were found in mass graves in Malaysia near the border with Thailand.

Donna Bruce was teaching a beauty class in Baltimore when one of her students blindsided her.In front of the entire class, “The student said I was a crackhead who has prostitution on her record out loud in front of everybody,” recalled Bruce. “It was the most humiliating thing.”In fact, Bruce had been trafficked for sexual exploitation by her own mother when she was a teenager, selling her own daughter to men in exchange for drugs. For years this abuse continued, and Bruce racked up a number of criminal charges on her record: prostitution, drug possession, theft, indecent exposure.Yet more than 20 years later, that criminal record haunts her and other survivors of sex trafficking across Maryland. The state ranks among the worst in the United States for criminal records relief for victims of trafficking.
